Hot Yoga Shirts for Men, or Shirtless? Etiquette at Our Bali Studios

The best hot yoga shirts for men are thin, fitted synthetic tanks or tees that wick sweat. But at our Seminyak and Canggu studios, going shirtless is also normal. Pick whichever you feel comfortable in, and skip heavy cotton, which gets soaked and clingy within minutes in Bali heat.

Yes! Be A Great Yoga Teacher - YogaFX International Yoga Teacher Training, E-RYT 200 Yoga Alliance

That is the short answer. This guide is for the man standing in front of his suitcase, or his wardrobe, wondering what to wear to his first heated class. It covers studio etiquette on shirtless practice, the fabrics that work, and a rupiah buyer’s guide with prices we checked on 29 October 2026.

Shirtless or Shirt: What Is Normal at Our Bali Studios

Both are normal. In our rooms, hot yoga shirts for men range from a thin tank to a snug tee, and plenty of men wear none. Nobody looks twice.

Our rooms run at about 40°C and 40% humidity for a 90-minute class, warmed by Bali’s natural tropical heat rather than electric heaters, so many men choose to wear less.

So the real question is not what is allowed. It is what helps you stay focused for 90 minutes. A shirt that clings and slides will distract you in every posture. A bare chest will not, but it asks a little more of you in terms of towel and hygiene habits, which we cover below. For the mat side of the kit, see bringing a hot yoga mat towel to Bali.

Hot yoga shirts for men in a Bali class: some men shirtless, others in tees and tanks, seated on teal towels

Whichever way you go, the rule we give new men is simple. Choose the option you will forget about by the second posture. If you keep tugging at a shirt, take it off or swap it. If you feel self-conscious without one, wear a thin tank. Neither choice marks you as a beginner or an expert.

Studio Etiquette If You Go Shirtless

Going without a top is fine, yet a shared room comes with shared habits. These are the small things that keep a heated class pleasant for everyone, and they matter more when your skin is bare against a towel and a mat.

    • Bring a full-size towel for your mat. Sweat drips straight onto the surface, and a towel keeps it off the floor and off the mat you may rent.
    • Keep your own space. Don’t wipe your face or arms on a neighbour’s towel, and keep your mat edge on your side of the line.
    • Wear shorts that stay put. A bare chest is relaxed, but shorts that ride up in a forward fold are not. Our guide to fitted hot yoga shorts for men shows what stays in place.
    • Shower and change after class. Dry off, put on clean clothes, and rinse your towel the same day.
    • Follow the teacher’s cues, not the crowd. If a teacher asks you to adjust your towel or mat, it is a safety note, not a criticism.

Some days you will want a top anyway. A cooler early class, a first visit, or a long week of daily practice can all make a thin layer feel right. That is why it helps to own one good tank and one fitted tee, and decide on the day.

Fabric: What the Best Hot Yoga Shirts for Men Are Made Of

If you do wear a top, fabric decides almost everything. Hot yoga shirts for men work or fail based on how fast they move sweat away from the skin. In a 40% humidity room, evaporation is already slower than in a dry gym, so a poor fabric makes the problem worse.

Good hot yoga tops men can trust share three traits: they are thin, they are synthetic and they fit close. A hot yoga tank top men like for Bali will also have flat seams and a neckline that stays put in a backbend.

Check the label before you buy. If it says 100% cotton, put it back, however soft it feels in an air-conditioned shop. A thin, mostly synthetic fabric is what you want, and a flat seam under the arm will save you a sore patch by the end of the week.

Tank, tee or no top: which suits which man

    • Thin tank. The most popular choice for men who want some cover. It keeps your shoulders free in the arm-overhead postures and dries quickly.
    • Fitted tee. More coverage and a little warmer. It suits men who burn easily or feel the cold in an early class.
    • Loose tee. Not ideal. It rides up in forward folds and hangs in your face in the backbend, so you spend the class fixing it.
    • No top. Coolest and simplest, as long as you bring a good towel and follow the habits above.

A loose, flowing shirt is the classic mistake with hot yoga shirts for men. It looks relaxed in the shop, but it twists and sticks once you are sweating. If you want more mistakes to avoid, our guide to what to wear to hot yoga in Bali lists seven of them.

The Numbers Behind One Hot Class in Bali

Before you buy hot yoga shirts for men, it helps to see what your kit is up against. These four figures sum up one class at our studios and what a basic dry-fit tank costs on the island.

    90 min

    One full class

26 postures and 2 breathing exercises with no break to change your top.

    40°C / 40%

    460 kcal

    Rp49,900+

Sources: YogaFX studio class format; Porcari et al., University of Wisconsin, 2014 (calorie and heart rate figures); Tokopedia men’s tank top listings, 29 October 2026.

The third card is why men notice their top more than they expect. A bigger body makes more heat, so it sweats more, and that sweat ends up soaking whatever you wear. As a result, a shirt that coped in a cool gym class can feel drenched in Bali.

What the Science Says About Heat, Sweat and Skin

A shirt is not a health product. Even so, a few research findings and medical guidelines explain why the advice above works, especially if you practise several times a week.

Men work hard in a heated class

A 2014 University of Wisconsin study (Porcari et al.) measured an average burn of 460 kcal for men and 333 kcal for women across a 90-minute heated class. Heart rates reached about 80% of maximum. That workload is why breathable fabric matters: your body needs to shed heat, and a wet, heavy shirt gets in the way.

Sweat, tight fabric and heat rash

Heat rash develops when a sweat duct is blocked, and sweat gets trapped under the skin. The Mayo Clinic lists people who are physically active in hot, humid climates among those at risk. Its heat rash guidance advises loose, lightweight clothing that pulls moisture away from the skin.

For hot yoga shirts for men, that means a thin synthetic that wicks, rather than a thick shirt that holds sweat against your back and chest. A fitted cut is fine as long as the fabric is light and not squeezing.

    Damp kit and jock itch

Here is the part most kit guides skip. The Mayo Clinic lists being male, wearing tight clothing and sweating heavily among the risk factors for jock itch. Its jock itch prevention advice is practical:

    • Dry the groin and inner thighs with a clean towel after showering or exercising.
    • Change your underwear daily, or more often if you sweat a lot.
    • Launder sweaty workout clothes after every use.
    • Avoid snug clothing that chafes the skin.

The same habits apply to hot yoga shirts for men. Wash them after every class and never wear a damp tank twice, however fast it dried on the line.

Light clothing helps with the heat

The NHS recommends light-coloured, loose clothing in hot weather to help prevent heat exhaustion. Its guide to heat exhaustion and heatstroke lists the warning signs, such as dizziness, headache, nausea, cramps and heavy sweating. In class we keep the “light” part and choose a fitted cut, because loose cloth slides around in postures.

Hot yoga is not a medical treatment. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or a skin problem that will not clear, consult a healthcare professional before you start, and tell your teacher before class. Sit down and rest if you feel dizzy at any point.

Buyer’s Guide: Hot Yoga Shirts for Men, Prices in Rupiah

You do not need to fly in with the perfect shirt. Bali makes it easy to buy hot yoga shirts for men once you land, at almost any budget. We checked prices on 29 October 2026. They will move with sales and stock, so treat them as a guide.

    Indonesian marketplace apps

Tokopedia, Shopee and Lazada all deliver across Seminyak and Canggu, often within a day or two. Search for terms such as “tanktop pria dry fit” or “kaos olahraga pria quick dry”. Then check the fabric line in the listing. Look for polyester or nylon with spandex, and skip anything listed as katun (cotton) or combed.

Some listings are plain cotton undershirts sold as singlets, at around Rp55,000, so read the description rather than the title. Sizes on local listings also run small. Check the size chart in centimetres against a top you already own. Buying two cheap tanks is a smart way to test fit before you spend more.

    Shops in Canggu and Seminyak

In Canggu, the Batu Bolong and Berawa streets have a cluster of activewear boutiques. In Seminyak, look along Jl. Kayu Aya and Jl. Raya Seminyak. Shops let you check the fabric by hand and do the mirror test before you pay. For a wider look at mats, towels and tops, our guide to yoga clothing and gear shopping in Bali maps each area and what it sells.

    A quick buying checklist

    • Mostly polyester or nylon with some elastane, no cotton.
    • A thin, fitted cut that does not hang loose at the hem.
    • Flat seams under the arms, so nothing rubs after 90 minutes.
    • A dark or mid colour, because sweat shows on pale fabric.
    • At least two tops if you plan to practise most days.

Drying and Care Between Classes in Bali

In Bali, drying time decides how many hot yoga shirts for men you need. Even the best quick-dry fabric slows down in humid air. So plan your kit around how often you will practise, not around one perfect shirt.

    1. Rinse right after class. Cold water and a little soap take out most of the sweat and salt.
    2. Press, do not wring. Roll the top in a towel to squeeze out water without stretching the fibres.
    3. Hang it in moving air. A fan or a breezy shaded balcony works better than direct midday sun, which fades colour.
    4. Skip fabric softener. Softener coats the fibres and blocks wicking. Ask the laundry for a cool wash with none.

A simple rule works for most of our visitors. Practising three times a week? Two tops is enough. Practising daily, or doing a full intensive week? Pack three tops so one is always dry.

What Students Say About a Week in the Heat

Kit sounds like a small thing until you practise every day. Then your choice of hot yoga shirts for men, or none, stops being a detail. These three students trained with Mr. Ian Terry, so they know what a week of heat asks of your body and your bag.

“…he was always extremely informative, attentive, and kind in answering my questions.”

    Kat, Google review, 2021

“I’m going to go back now really knowing what I’m doing and feeling confident.”

    Matt, YouTube review, 2025

“Thank you for pushing us, giving this wonderful experience. It has been lifechanging.” (from YouTube captions)

    Fabiola, YouTube review, 2024

None of them wrote about shirts, and that is the point. When your kit works, it disappears, and the week is about the practice and the people. A week of back-to-back hot classes is also the best test of drying time you will ever run.

    FAQ

Can men go shirtless in hot yoga?

Yes. At our Seminyak and Canggu studios, going shirtless is normal for men in a heated class. Bring a full-size towel for your mat, wear fitted shorts that stay put, and shower after class. If you feel more comfortable in a thin tank, wear that instead.

What do guys wear to hot yoga?

Most men wear fitted, quick-dry synthetic shorts and either a thin tank or no top. Choose light synthetic fabric over cotton, because cotton soaks up sweat and gets heavy. Bring a towel for your mat and a dry change of clothes for after class.

Can I wear a cotton T-shirt to hot yoga?

You can, but it is not ideal. Cotton absorbs sweat, turns heavy and clings within the first part of a 90-minute class. In Bali humidity it also dries slowly. A thin synthetic tank or fitted tee is cooler, lighter and easier to wash and dry.

What are the best hot yoga shirts for men?

The best hot yoga shirts for men are thin, fitted tanks or tees in polyester or nylon with a little elastane. They move sweat away from the skin and dry fast. Flat seams and a dark colour help. Avoid loose cuts that ride up in forward folds.

How many tops should I bring to Bali for hot yoga?

Bring two tops if you will practise up to three times a week, and three if you will practise daily. Bali humidity slows drying, so a top washed in the evening may still be damp next morning. Cheap spares are easy to order on local marketplace apps.
