A hot yoga mat towel is worth owning if you sweat heavily, because a wet mat turns slippery within the first few postures. In Bali you can pack one or buy one locally. A basic towel costs about Rp18,000, and a grip-dot version runs from about Rp198,000 to Rp273,000.
Mr. Ian Terry, E-RYT 500, has taught more than 12,000 hours in hot rooms. His rule for new students is simple: your hot yoga mat towel should stay put when you are dripping, and it should fold small enough for a scooter bag. The rest of this guide shows you how to choose one, where to buy it, and when to just rent a mat and go.
Hot Yoga Mat Towel or Mat: What Each One Does
Most men ask this first: do I need a mat, a towel, or both? The answer is that they do different jobs. The mat cushions the floor and keeps its place. The hot yoga mat towel sits on top and gives you a surface that gets grippier as it takes on sweat.
| Item | What it does | Weak spot | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio mat | Cushions the floor and stays in place | Gets slick once sweat pools on it | Resting poses and the floor series |
| Plain mat towel | Soaks up sweat and covers the mat | Can bunch when you step back | First classes and light sweaters |
| Grip-dot mat towel | Silicone dots hold the towel to the mat | Costs more, needs careful drying | Heavy sweaters and regular practice |
| Small sweat towel | Dries your face, hands and arms | Does not help your feet | Everyone, in every class |
So the pair works best. You rest on the mat, and the hot yoga mat towel gives your hands and feet a steadier surface. A small sweat towel then keeps drips out of your eyes. If you only buy one item, make it the mat towel.
Why does it matter so much in a standing class? Because balance postures leave very little room for sliding. In Dandayamana-Janushirasana (Standing Head to Knee Pose), one foot carries your whole weight. A slick surface turns a good posture into a slip.
Do You Need a Towel for Hot Yoga in Bali’s Heat?
Yes, for most men. A YogaFX class runs for 90 minutes in a room at about 40°C and 40% humidity. The heat is natural tropical heat, not electric heaters. Sweat starts early, and it doesn’t stop.
Some men skip the towel at first and feel fine. Then the standing series arrives, and their hands slide off their feet. That’s the moment a hot yoga mat towel pays for itself. It’s cheap insurance against a posture you can’t hold.
THE CLASS
90 minutes
One full 26 and 2 class, start to finish.
THE ROOM
40°C
Natural Bali heat, no electric heaters.
THE AIR
40% humidity
Sweat stays on your skin and on your mat.
THE EFFORT
460 kcal
Average for men in a 90-minute heated class.
The effort is real. A 2014 University of Wisconsin study (Porcari et al.) measured an average of 460 kcal for men and 333 kcal for women in a 90-minute heated class. Heart rates reached about 80% of maximum. That is a hard workout, and hard work means sweat.

Look at any class photo from our studios and you will see the same thing. Teal towels cover almost every mat. Bottles sit at the edges. People who practise often have worked out what keeps them steady.
Hot Yoga Mat Towel for Men: What to Look For
Men tend to sweat more than they expect in a first heated class. They are also often taller, so the size of the towel matters. Here is what to check before you pay for a hot yoga mat towel.
- Full mat length. Look for about 183 cm, so your hands and feet never land on bare mat. Taller men should measure their own mat first.
- Microfibre, not thick cotton. Microfibre dries faster and folds smaller. A thick bath towel bunches and slides.
- Silicone grip dots underneath. They hold the towel to the mat when you step back or lunge.
- A colour that hides stains. Dark and mid tones look clean for longer than white.
- A towel you can wash often. You will wash it after every class, so skip delicate fabrics.
Corner pockets are a nice extra. They hook over the mat corners, so the towel stays put even when you drag a foot across it. Not every towel has them, though, and a good one without pockets still works fine.
Plain or grip-dot hot yoga mat towel?
A plain hot yoga mat towel is fine for your first week. It costs very little, and it shows you whether you like the feel. After that, many regular students move to a grip-dot version, because the dots stop the creep that happens during long sets.
That is the small upgrade worth paying for. A thin plain towel is a fair test, but a good grip towel is the one piece of kit that changes how a class feels. For the full packing list, see our guide to hot yoga gear for men, and read what to wear to hot yoga in Bali for tops and shorts.
Bring a Hot Yoga Mat Towel to Bali or Buy Locally?
Both choices work for a hot yoga mat towel. The right one depends on how long you stay, how much you already own, and how much space you have in your bag. Here’s a quick way to decide.
Pack one from home if…
- You already own a towel you trust and know how it behaves when wet.
- You are staying for several weeks and want the same towel every day.
- You have spare bag space, because a microfibre towel folds very small.
Buy one in Bali if…
- This is your first heated class, and you don’t yet know how much you sweat.
- You want a second towel, so one can dry while you use the other.
- You are travelling light, because a towel is easy to find here and cheap.
For most visitors, buying locally wins. A hot yoga mat towel is one of the easiest things to find in Seminyak and Canggu. You also avoid carrying a damp, heavy towel home.
There is one trap. Don’t buy the thinnest, cheapest towel and expect it to grip. It’ll work for a first class. But if you plan to practise most days, you will want a better one within a week. That is why buying two cheap towels to test is a smart move.
Buyer’s Guide: Hot Yoga Mat Towel Prices in Rupiah
We checked listings on Tokopedia on 27 October 2026. Prices move with sales and stock, so use them as a guide, not a quote. We have not price-checked in-store, so compare a shop price with the app price before you pay.
| Item | What to look for | Price seen (IDR) | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain mat towel | Full length, microfibre, no dots | Rp18,000 to Rp20,000 | Marketplace apps, sports shops |
| Grip-dot mat towel | Silicone dots, carry bag | Rp197,999 to Rp273,000 | Marketplace apps, activewear shops |
| Basic 6 mm mat | TPE, light, easy to wipe | About Rp18,000 | Marketplace apps, supermarkets |
| Mid-range mat | Firm surface, wipes clean | Rp90,000 to Rp289,000 | Marketplace apps, sports shops |
| Premium mat | Thicker, longer lasting | Up to about Rp479,000 | Sports shops, marketplace apps |
That table shows the gap clearly. A plain hot yoga mat towel costs about the same as a coffee. A grip-dot version costs roughly ten times more, but it lasts for many classes. So the question is how often you plan to practise.
Indonesian marketplace apps
Tokopedia, Shopee and Lazada all deliver to villas in Seminyak and Canggu. Searching in Indonesian gives better results for a hot yoga mat towel. Try handuk yoga (yoga towel) or matras yoga (yoga mat). Then filter by rating and read the size and material lines before you pay.
Shops in Seminyak and Canggu
In Seminyak, activewear and sports shops line Jl. Kayu Aya and Jl. Raya Seminyak. In Canggu, look along Batu Bolong, Batu Mejan and Berawa. Surf shops in both areas often stock a hot yoga mat towel too, since surfers need them. Our guide to yoga clothing and gear shopping in Bali maps what each area sells.

Hot Yoga Mat for Men: Do You Need Your Own?
Not on day one. Both YogaFX studios have rental mats, so the bulkiest item never has to ride on your scooter. Most first-timers rent a mat and bring only a hot yoga mat towel. That keeps the bag light and the cost low.
If you plan to stay for months, a mat of your own makes sense. You will know exactly how it feels, and you will not share it. When people ask us about the best hot yoga mat for men, we give them a checklist instead of a brand, because the right mat depends on your height, budget and bag.
- Length. A tall man needs a mat long enough for both head and feet in lying postures.
- Surface. Choose something that wipes clean in seconds, since you will be wiping it often.
- Weight. Anything heavy is a pain on a scooter, so lighter wins.
- Thickness. Around 6 mm is common for budget mats, and it is enough for most students.
- Price. A basic mat costs about Rp18,000, so you can try one before you spend more.
That said, the towel matters more than the mat. A modest mat with a good hot yoga mat towel on top beats an expensive mat used bare. If you are weighing a first purchase, start with the towel.
How to Care for Your Hot Yoga Mat Towel in Bali’s Humidity
A good hot yoga mat towel lasts longer if you treat it well, so here’s the routine. Bali’s humidity is hard on damp fabric, so the routine matters as much as the purchase.
- Lay it flat. Smooth out wrinkles and tuck the corners before class starts.
- Keep a small towel nearby. Dry your hands on it before balance postures.
- Rinse it after class. Clean water removes most of the salt and sweat.
- Hang it in moving air. A fan or a breezy shaded balcony works best.
- Wash it often. Use a mild detergent and skip fabric softener, which can coat the fibres.
Never leave a wet towel folded in a bag, because it won’t dry. In Bali’s warm air, damp fabric turns sour within hours. As a result, many students keep two towels and rotate them. One dries while the other works.

A new hot yoga mat towel sometimes needs a wash or two before it grips well. If yours feels slick at first, give it a wash and try again. Most settle in after a few classes.
What the Science Says About Sweat, Fluids and Safety
A hot yoga mat towel helps with grip, but your body also needs care in the heat. The research is clear that heavy sweating changes how you feel, and a few simple habits keep you safe.
Sweat and dehydration
The NHS lists sweating a lot during exercise as a cause of dehydration. Its guide to dehydration symptoms and causes names thirst, headache, light-headedness, dark urine and tiredness as signs. It advises drinking more when you are sweating heavily.
Salt and heat exhaustion
The NHS also notes that an isotonic sports drink or oral rehydration powder mixed with water helps replace salt lost through sweating. Its page on heat exhaustion and heatstroke lists dizziness, cramps, nausea and heavy sweating among the warning signs.
So the hot yoga mat towel is one part of a bigger plan. Drink water through the day, not a litre in the last ten minutes. Eat something light before class. Sit down and rest if you feel dizzy. Tell your teacher if anything feels wrong.
The Mayo Clinic’s page on heat exhaustion symptoms and causes gives the same advice: stop, rest somewhere cooler and drink cool water or a sports drink.
Hot yoga is not a medical treatment. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or take regular medication, consult a healthcare professional before you start. Research suggests heated classes are a real workout, so treat the first few as a trial.
What Students Say About Practising With Us
Gear helps, but people make you come back. These students spent time in our Bali rooms and told us what it was like.
“The Hot Yoga classes were intense, grounding and incredibly empowering.”
Sophie, Google review, 2026
“This is beyond my expectations for the program.”
Cristine, YouTube review, 2024
“Mr. Ian is one of the best teachers, I have ever met.”
Ritesh, Google review, 2019
You can watch Cristine’s video review below to hear it in her own words.
Nobody mentions their towel in a review, and that’s the point. When your kit works, you stop thinking about it, and the class becomes about your breath and your body.
What YogaFX Gives You and What to Bring
You don’t have to arrive with everything. Both studios have rental mats. YogaFX also gives students its own merchandise with their classes, so ask at the front desk which items come with your pass or membership before you buy duplicates.
- The studio covers: rental mats, a heated room, and a teacher who knows the room.
- Your bag covers: a mat towel, a small sweat towel, water and a dry change of clothes.
- Ask us about: which merchandise comes with your classes.

New to all of this? Our guide to what your first hot yoga class in Bali is like walks you through the room, the heat and the first 90 minutes.

FAQ
Do you need a towel for hot yoga?
Most people do. In a room at 40°C and 40% humidity, sweat pools on the mat quickly, and a bare mat turns slippery. A hot yoga mat towel soaks up that moisture and gives your hands and feet a steadier surface. Heavy sweaters, and many men, feel the difference within minutes.
Can you use a regular towel for hot yoga?
You can, but it works less well. A bath or beach towel is thick, bunches when you step back and slides once it is wet. A thin microfibre mat towel lies flat and dries faster. For a first class, a regular towel is a fine backup while you decide.
Hot yoga mat or towel: which do you need?
You need both, because they do different jobs. The mat cushions the floor and stays in place under you. The towel sits on top and grips better as it gets wet. Both YogaFX studios have rental mats, so many students bring only a towel.
How do you wash a hot yoga mat towel?
Rinse it in clean water straight after class, then wash it on a warm cycle with mild detergent. Skip fabric softener, because it can coat the fibres and cut grip. Hang it flat in moving air. A damp towel folded in a bag turns sour quickly in Bali’s humidity.
What size hot yoga mat towel do I need?
Pick a towel that covers your whole mat, usually about 183 cm long, so your hands and feet never touch bare mat. Taller men should measure their own mat first. A towel that is too short slides off the mat and leaves wet gaps under your feet.
