Hot Yoga Gear for Men: What Fits in a Bali Scooter Bag

In this article

The hot yoga gear for men that fits in a Bali scooter bag comes down to nine light items: a large sweat towel, a grip mat towel, a 1-litre bottle, an electrolyte drink, a headband, quick-dry shorts, a dry bag, a spare shirt for the ride home and dry underwear. All of it squeezes under one scooter seat.

That’s the list. The rest of this guide shows you how to pack it, what each piece should cost in rupiah, and where to buy it in Seminyak and Canggu. It’s written for the man riding to our studio in his shorts, with a bag that has to survive 90 minutes in the heat and 15 minutes in the traffic.

The Hot Yoga Gear for Men That Fits Under a Scooter Seat

Most men in Bali reach class on a scooter. So your hot yoga gear for men has a size limit: the storage space under the seat, or a small backpack on your shoulders. Bulky gym bags, glass bottles and full-size yoga mats don’t make the cut.

Here’s the complete list of hot yoga gear for men we see work, class after class, at our Seminyak and Canggu studios.

    1. Large sweat towel. For your face, hands and arms between postures. Microfibre folds smaller than cotton.
    2. Mat towel with grip. Lies over the mat so your feet don’t slide once you start dripping.
    3. 1-litre water bottle. Plastic or insulated steel, with a lid that won’t leak on a bumpy road.
    4. Electrolyte drink or sachet. For after class, when you’ve lost a lot of salt in sweat.
    5. Headband or sweatband. Keeps sweat and hair out of your eyes in the standing series.
    6. Quick-dry shorts. Fitted, synthetic, no cotton. You can wear them on the ride there.
    7. Dry bag. A small waterproof bag that keeps wet kit away from your phone and wallet.
    8. Spare shirt for the ride home. A light, dry top so you’re not riding in a soaked one.
    9. Dry underwear. The most forgotten item, and the one you’ll miss most.

Notice what isn’t on the list. You don’t need shoes in class, because hot yoga is a barefoot practice. You don’t need a heavy rubber mat either, since rental mats are available at both studios. That saves the biggest space in your bag.

How to pack the bag in 2 minutes

Pack your hot yoga gear for men in layers, so the wet things never touch the dry things. Then, after class, you only swap two items around.

    • Bottom: the empty dry bag, rolled flat, with your spare shirt and underwear on top of it.
    • Middle: both towels, folded tight, plus the headband tucked inside one fold.
    • Top: the water bottle and the electrolyte drink, standing upright if the space allows.
    • After class: wet towels, shorts and headband go into the dry bag, and the dry shirt comes out.

Add the shorts and spare shirt you probably already own, and the whole set of hot yoga gear for men costs less than a week of cafe lattes in Canggu. So there’s no reason to skip any of it.

Towels: The One Item Worth Paying More For

If you buy only one piece of hot yoga gear for men, buy a good mat towel. In a room at about 40°C and 40% humidity, sweat pools on a bare mat within the first few postures. Then your feet slide in the balancing series, and a slip there can turn into a fall.

A mat towel lies over your mat and grips better as it gets wet. Of all the hot yoga gear for men on this list, it’s the one that protects you most. The cheap thin ones work for a first class. However, for regular practice, look for silicone dots on the underside, because they stop the towel bunching when you step back.

    • Mat towel: full mat length, microfibre, grip dots underneath. It’s the one to spend more on.
    • Sweat towel: a hand towel or small bath towel for your face and hands. Microfibre packs smallest.
    • Bonus towel: a cheap second one for drying off after the shower, so you don’t use a soaked one.

Men tend to sweat more than they expect in their first heated class. So the sweat towel matters more for you than it might for a lighter, smaller practitioner. Dry hands mean a firmer grip on your feet in Dandayamana-Janushirasana (Standing Head to Knee).

Water Bottle and Electrolytes for a 90-Minute Class

A 1-litre bottle is the right size for one class, and it’s the heaviest piece of hot yoga gear for men you’ll carry. Smaller bottles run out halfway through, and bigger ones won’t fit under the seat. Pick a screw lid rather than a flip straw, because flip lids leak on Bali’s potholes.

Plastic sport bottles are light and cheap. Insulated steel bottles keep water cold for the whole class, which feels great in the floor series. Either works, so choose by budget and how much weight you want to carry.

When an electrolyte drink makes sense

Sweat isn’t just water. It also carries salt, and a long, sweaty class can leave you flat and thirsty for hours. That’s why an electrolyte drink earns its place in your hot yoga gear for men. Drink it after class, alongside plain water.

    • Before class: drink water through the day, not a litre in the last ten minutes.
    • During class: sip water when your teacher allows, usually between postures.
    • After class: an isotonic drink or an electrolyte sachet mixed into your bottle.

Food matters too. A heavy meal before class is a mistake, but so is arriving empty. Our guide to what to eat before and after hot yoga covers timing and the snacks that sit well in the heat.

Hot Yoga Headband for Men: Small Item, Big Difference

Sweat running into your eyes is the most annoying part of a hot class. A hot yoga headband for men fixes it for the price of a coffee. It also keeps longer hair off your face, which matters when you’re upside down in Pada-Hastasana (Hands to Feet Pose).

    • Terry sweatband: soaks up the most sweat, but gets heavy and slow to dry.
    • Thin wicking band: light, dries fast, and stays put. The best choice for most men.
    • Running bandana or head tie: adjustable, which helps if you have a lot of hair.

Short hair or a shaved head? You might still want one, because it’s the cheapest hot yoga gear for men that changes how a class feels. Sweat from the forehead drips straight into your eyes when you fold forward. A thin band stops that for most men.

The Spare Shirt and Dry Bag for the Ride Home

Here’s the part men forget. You finish class soaked, step outside into warm, damp air, and then ride home. A wet shirt on a scooter feels cold and clammy within minutes, even in Bali. So the spare shirt is part of your hot yoga gear for men, not an extra.

Pick a light top that dries fast and doesn’t crease. A basic dry-fit T-shirt does the job, and it doubles as your shirt for the beach or the cafe afterwards. Loose cotton is fine here too, because you’ve stopped sweating.

The dry bag is the other half of the plan. Wet towels and shorts go in, the roll-top closes, and your phone, wallet and helmet liner stay dry. A small 2 to 5 litre bag holds all the wet hot yoga gear for men from one class.

    • Change before you ride. Use the studio changing area, then pack the wet kit straight into the dry bag.
    • Empty it the same day. A closed bag in a hot scooter seat turns damp kit sour by morning.
    • Hang everything in moving air. A fan or a breezy, shaded balcony dries kit faster than a closed room.

Shorts get their own guide, because fit and liners deserve the detail. Read our guide to choosing hot yoga shorts in Bali’s humidity before you buy a pair.

    Indonesian marketplace apps

Tokopedia, Shopee and Lazada all deliver to villas in Seminyak and Canggu. Searches in Indonesian give the best results, for example handuk yoga (yoga towel), headband pria (men’s headband) or dry bag. Then filter by rating and read the size and material lines before you pay.

Buying two cheap mat towels is a smart way to test hot yoga gear for men before you commit. You’ll learn which grip and size you like before you spend more on a premium one.

    Shops in Seminyak and Canggu

In Seminyak, activewear and sports shops line Jl. Kayu Aya and Jl. Raya Seminyak, and the malls nearby carry sports brands. In Canggu, look along Batu Bolong, Batu Mejan and Berawa. Surf shops in both areas also sell dry bags and headbands, since surfers need the same things.

Electrolyte drinks are the easiest of all. Every minimarket on the main roads stocks isotonic drinks, so you can grab one on the ride over. For a full map of what each area sells, read our guide to yoga clothing and gear shopping in Bali.

What the Science Says About Sweat, Salt and Skin

Gear isn’t medicine. Still, a few research findings and health guidelines explain why this kit list works, especially for men who practise several times a week.

Men work hard in a heated class

A 2014 University of Wisconsin study (Porcari et al.) measured an average of 460 kcal for men and 333 kcal for women in a 90-minute heated class. Heart rates reached about 80% of maximum. That’s a real workout, and it explains why towels and fluids sit at the top of this list.

Why salt matters after you sweat

The NHS notes that an isotonic sports drink or oral rehydration powder helps replace salt lost through sweating, as part of its advice on heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The same page lists the warning signs: tiredness, dizziness, headache, cramps, heavy sweating and strong thirst.

Dehydration is the quieter version of the same problem. The NHS guide to dehydration symptoms and causes names heavy sweating during exercise and hot weather as common causes. Dark urine, a dry mouth and light-headedness are signs to drink more and rest.

    Dry clothes protect your skin

The Mayo Clinic lists being male, sweating heavily and wearing tight clothing among the risk factors for jock itch, a fungal skin infection. Its jock itch prevention advice includes drying the groin with a clean towel after exercise, changing underwear daily and washing workout clothes after each use.

That’s exactly why the spare underwear and the dry bag belong in your hot yoga gear for men. Changing straight after class, rather than riding home damp, is a simple habit that keeps your skin healthy.

Hot yoga isn’t a medical treatment. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or take regular medication, consult a healthcare professional before you start, and tell your teacher before class. Sit down and rest if you feel dizzy at any point.

What YogaFX Gives You and What You Bring

You don’t have to arrive with everything. Both studios have rental mats, so the bulkiest item never needs to ride with you. YogaFX also gives students its own merchandise with their classes. Ask at the front desk which items come with your pass or membership before you buy duplicates.

What you bring is the personal hot yoga gear for men: towels, bottle, headband, shorts and a dry change of clothes. Those are the things you’ll want to wash yourself and use every time.

    • The studio covers: rental mats, the heated room and a teacher who knows the room.
    • Your bag covers: towels, water, electrolytes, headband, shorts, dry clothes.
    • Ask us about: which merchandise comes with your classes.

Not sure about the clothes side? Our guide on what to wear to hot yoga in Bali covers tops, fabrics and the seven mistakes first-timers make.

What Students Say About the Heat and the Team

Gear makes the heat easier, but people make you come back. These students spent a full intensive week in the Bali heat with our teaching team, so they know what daily practice asks of you.

“Gorgeous and very challenging teacher training experience. The team is highly qualified, kind and disciplined.”

    Annabel, Google review, 2026

“Mr. Ian isn’t just a great Bikram teacher, he’s also a true life coach, pushing you to grow both on and off the mat.”

    Dany, Google review, 2025

“The course was transformative for me, not just professionally, but personally too.”

    Mayuri, Google review, 2026

Nobody mentions their hot yoga gear for men in a review, and that’s the point. When the kit works, you stop thinking about it, and the class is about your body and your breath.

    FAQ

What should I wear to hot yoga as a man?

Wear fitted, quick-dry synthetic shorts and either a thin tank or no top at all. Skip cotton, because it soaks up sweat and gets heavy. Bring a large towel, a mat towel and a litre of water. A headband helps keep sweat out of your eyes, and a dry shirt makes the trip home comfortable.

Can men go to hot yoga?

Yes. Our Seminyak and Canggu studios run mixed classes, and many men start with tight hamstrings and no yoga background. The 26&2 sequence follows the same order every time, so you learn it quickly. Your teacher talks you through each posture, and you can rest whenever you need to.

How should men wear their hair for hot yoga?

Keep it off your face and neck. Longer hair works best tied back low, with a thin wicking headband over the hairline to catch sweat. Short hair needs nothing, though many men still wear a band to stop sweat dripping into their eyes in forward folds. Bring a spare tie, because elastic weakens in the heat.

What shoes do you wear to hot yoga?

None. Hot yoga is a barefoot practice, so your feet can grip the mat towel in standing postures. Socks turn slippery once they’re wet. Ride to the studio in sandals or flip-flops that slip off easily, and leave them at the door. That also keeps the room cleaner for everyone in class.

Is hot yoga good for men?

Many men find it a demanding full-body workout. A University of Wisconsin study measured an average of 460 kcal for men in a 90-minute heated class, with heart rates near 80% of maximum. It also works on flexibility, which most men lack. If you have a health condition, check with a healthcare professional first.
