Hot Yoga Shorts for Men: What Works in Bali’s Tropical Humidity

In this article

The best hot yoga shorts for men in Bali are fitted, quick-dry synthetic shorts with a 5 to 7 inch inseam and a breathable built-in liner. They stay put in forward folds and dry between classes, even in tropical humidity. Skip cotton and baggy board shorts, because both hold sweat and slide around.

That’s the short answer. This guide to hot yoga shorts for men is for the man who has booked a few classes at our Seminyak or Canggu studio and wants to get his kit right before day one. It covers fabric, length, liners and drying time, then gives real price ranges in rupiah and where to buy on the island.

What Makes Good Hot Yoga Shorts for Men in Bali

Good hot yoga shorts for men do four jobs at once. They move sweat off your skin, they stay in place upside down, they keep you covered in every posture, and they dry before your next class. Bali’s humidity makes that last job harder than it is at home.

Our rooms run at about 40°C and 40% humidity for a 90-minute class, using Bali’s natural tropical heat rather than electric heaters. Outside the studio the air stays warm and damp all day. So a pair that dries overnight in Europe may still be damp the next morning in Canggu.

    • Fabric: a light synthetic blend, such as polyester or nylon with some elastane, that wicks sweat and dries fast.
    • Fit: close to the thigh but not squeezing, so the leg doesn’t ride up in floor postures.
    • Length: a 5 to 7 inch inseam for most men. Shorter is cooler, longer gives more coverage.
    • Liner: a soft, breathable inner brief, or a separate pair of sport briefs underneath.
    • Waistband: flat and wide, with a drawcord that doesn’t dig into your stomach in floor postures.

Get those five right and you’ll forget about your shorts by the second posture. That is the real test, because every glance at your waistband is a moment you’re not breathing or holding the pose.

Fabric: Why Cotton Fails in Tropical Humidity

Fabric decides almost everything when you choose hot yoga shorts for men. Cotton soaks up sweat and holds it, so a cotton pair turns heavy and clingy within the first part of class. In Bali it also takes hours to dry, which means you pull on damp shorts for the next session.

Synthetic technical fabric works the other way. It pulls moisture to the outer surface, where it spreads out and evaporates. Humid air slows that process down, so thin fabric and open weaves matter even more here than in a dry climate.

Check the label before you buy. If it says 100% cotton, put it back, however soft it feels in an air-conditioned shop. A blend with mostly polyester or nylon and 5 to 15% elastane is what you want for hot yoga shorts for men.

Length and Fit for 26 Postures

The 26&2 sequence tests hot yoga shorts for men harder than any gym session. It puts your legs in every position you can think of. You kick forward, fold in half, lie on your back and lift your legs. So the right length and fit depend on what the shorts do in those moments, not how they look in a mirror.

Inseam length: 5 to 7 inches suits most men

A 5 inch inseam is the most common length in hot yoga shorts for men. It sits mid-thigh. It’s cool, it doesn’t bunch behind the knee, and it’s what many regulars wear. A 7 inch inseam gives more coverage for men who feel exposed in floor postures. Anything past 9 inches starts to trap heat and gets caught when you bend the knee.

Very short shorts, around 3 inches, are the coolest option. They work well if you’re comfortable with them. Still, make sure the leg opening is snug, because a loose short leg gaps open when you lie on your back.

    Fit: fitted, not compressed

Loose shorts slide toward your hips in forward folds. That happens in Pada-Hastasana (Hands to Feet Pose) and again in the floor series. Fitted shorts stay where they are, so your teacher can also see your knees and hips, which helps with alignment cues.

Don’t go too far the other way, though. Very tight compression shorts can rub in the heat. We’ll look at why that matters for your skin in the science section below.

Liner or No Liner: What Works for Hot Yoga Shorts for Men

The liner question comes up at our front desk more than any other question about hot yoga shorts for men. There are three workable set-ups, and each has a trade-off.

    • Built-in brief liner. A light mesh brief sewn inside the shorts. It’s the simplest option and dries with the shorts. Choose this if you want one item to pack and wash.
    • 2-in-1 shorts with a compression liner. A short pair of tights under a looser outer short. You get full coverage in every posture, but there’s twice the fabric to dry.
    • Unlined shorts with sport briefs. Swap the briefs after every class and keep the shorts for a second wear. It’s the most flexible set-up for a week of daily classes.

Whatever you choose, test it before class. Stand side-on to a mirror, fold forward, then sit and lift one knee. If you can see more than you’d like, add a liner or go one length longer.

The Numbers Behind One Hot Class in Bali

Before you pick your hot yoga shorts for men, it helps to see what they’re up against. These four figures sum up one class at our studios and what the right kit costs here.

    90 min

    One full class

26 postures and 2 breathing exercises with no break to change.

    40°C / 40%

    Natural tropical heat

    460 kcal

    Average burn for men

Sources: YogaFX studio class format; Porcari et al., University of Wisconsin, 2014 (calorie and heart rate figures); Tokopedia listings for 2-in-1 running shorts, October 2026.

The third card is why men notice their kit more than they expect. A bigger body makes more heat, so it sweats more, and that sweat ends up in your waistband and liner. As a result, fabric that coped in a cool gym class can feel soaked through in Bali.

What the Science Says About Heat, Sweat and Skin

Shorts aren’t a health product. Even so, a few research findings and medical guidelines explain why the advice above works, especially for men practising several times a week.

Men work hard in a heated class

A 2014 University of Wisconsin study (Porcari et al.) measured an average burn of 460 kcal for men and 333 kcal for women across a 90-minute heated class. Heart rates reached about 80% of maximum. That workload is why breathable fabric matters: your body needs to shed heat, and wet, heavy cloth gets in the way.

Damp, tight kit and jock itch

Here’s the part most kit guides skip. The Mayo Clinic lists heavy sweating, tight clothing and being male among the risk factors for jock itch, a fungal skin infection of the groin. Its jock itch prevention advice is clear and practical:

    • Dry the groin and inner thighs with a clean towel after showering or exercising.
    • Change your underwear daily, or more often if you sweat a lot.
    • Wash workout clothes after each use.
    • Avoid tight clothing that chafes the skin.

For hot yoga shorts for men, that means a few simple habits. Pick fitted rather than crushing compression, change out of your shorts straight after class, and never wear the same liner twice without washing it. In Bali’s humidity, this matters more than any style choice.

Light clothing helps you handle the heat

The NHS advises light, loose clothing and plenty of cold drinks to help prevent heat exhaustion in hot weather. Its guide to heat exhaustion and heatstroke also lists the warning signs, such as dizziness, headache, nausea and heavy sweating. In class we keep the “light” part and choose a fitted cut, since loose fabric slides around in postures.

Hot yoga isn’t a medical treatment. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or a skin problem that won’t clear, consult a healthcare professional before you start, and tell your teacher before class.

Buyer’s Guide: Prices in Rupiah and Where to Buy

You don’t need to fly in with the perfect pair. Bali makes it easy to buy hot yoga shorts for men once you land, at almost any budget. We checked prices in October 2026, and they’ll move with sales and stock, so treat them as a guide.

    Indonesian marketplace apps

Tokopedia, Shopee and Lazada all deliver across Seminyak and Canggu, often within a day or two. Search for terms such as “celana running 2 in 1” or “celana pendek quick dry pria”. Then filter by rating and read the fabric line in the listing. Look for polyester or nylon with spandex, and skip anything listed as “katun”.

Sizes on local listings for hot yoga shorts for men often run small. So check the size chart in centimetres against a pair you own. Buying two cheap pairs is a smart way to test length and liner before you spend more.

    Shops in Canggu and Seminyak

In Canggu, the Batu Bolong, Batu Mejan and Berawa streets have a cluster of activewear boutiques. In Seminyak, look along Jl. Kayu Aya and Jl. Raya Seminyak, or in the shopping malls nearby. Shops let you do the mirror test before you pay, which is worth a lot if you’re unsure about liners.

    A quick buying checklist

    • Mostly polyester or nylon with some elastane, no cotton.
    • A 5 to 7 inch inseam, with a snug leg opening.
    • A breathable liner, or a plan for sport briefs underneath.
    • A flat waistband that stays put when you fold forward.
    • At least two pairs if you plan to practise most days.

Drying and Care Between Classes in Bali

In Bali, drying time decides how many pairs of hot yoga shorts for men you need. Even the best quick-dry shorts slow down in humid air. So plan your kit around how often you’ll practise, not around one perfect pair.

    1. Rinse right after class. Cold water and a little soap take out most of the sweat and salt.
    2. Roll them in a towel. Press out the water instead of wringing, which stretches the elastane.
    3. Hang them in moving air. A fan or a breezy shaded balcony works better than direct midday sun, which fades the fabric.
    4. Turn liners inside out. The liner is the last part to dry, so give it the air.
    5. Use laundry for a full wash. Bali’s laundry services are cheap and quick, but ask for a cool wash with no fabric softener, because softener blocks wicking.

A simple rule works for most of our visitors. Practising three times a week? Two pairs is enough. Practising daily, or doing a full intensive week? Pack three pairs so one is always dry.

Shorts vs Leggings vs Board Shorts

Hot yoga shorts for men aren’t your only option, and some men feel more at ease in longer kit. Here’s how the main choices compare in a 40°C room.

    • Fitted shorts: the coolest choice and the easiest to dry. Best for most men.
    • Leggings or long tights: full coverage and good grip for the leg in some postures. They’re hotter and slower to dry, so they suit men who feel the cold or want coverage.
    • Light track pants: fine for a first class if they’re thin and synthetic. However, they get heavy once soaked.
    • Board shorts: built for the beach, not the mat. They’re loose, stiff and slide toward your hips.

Tops are a separate choice. Many men practise shirtless, and that’s normal in our rooms. If you’d rather wear one, a thin, close-fitting synthetic tank works best. Our full guide on what to wear to hot yoga in Bali covers tops, towels and the most common kit mistakes.

What Students Say About a Week in the Heat

Kit sounds like a small thing until you practise every day. Then hot yoga shorts for men stop being a detail. These three students spent a full week of daily classes in the Bali heat on our teacher training, so they know what it asks of your body and your bag.

“Mr Ian is a brilliant teacher and excellent facilitator and his team (Ms Ivara), are so supportive. It’s one of the best things I have done myself.”

    Frances, Google review, 2026

“The intensive week of classes and clinics in Bali that followed fully prepared me to now feel confident teaching a 90 minute hot yoga class.”

    Anne, Google review, 2025

“I also am more confident in myself and my abilities to do whatever I put my mind to.”

    Clara, Google review, 2024

None of them wrote about shorts, and that’s the point. When your kit works, it disappears, and the week is about the practice and the people. A week of back-to-back hot classes is also the best test of drying time you’ll ever run.

    FAQ

Can you wear shorts to hot yoga?

Yes. Hot yoga shorts for men are the most common choice in a heated class. Pick fitted, quick-dry synthetic shorts with a 5 to 7 inch inseam and a liner or sport briefs underneath. Avoid loose cotton or board shorts, because they soak up sweat and slide around in forward folds.

Should you wear shorts or leggings to hot yoga?

Most men find shorts cooler and easier to dry, which matters in Bali’s humidity. Leggings or long tights give more coverage and suit men who feel exposed in floor postures. Both work if the fabric is a thin synthetic blend. Avoid heavy cotton in either style, since it gets heavy once soaked.

What do guys wear to yoga class?

For a hot class, most men wear fitted synthetic shorts and either a thin tank or no top. For a room-temperature class, light joggers and a T-shirt are common too. In our Seminyak and Canggu studios, shorts and a bare chest or a snug tank are normal, so nobody will look twice.

Can you wear biker shorts to hot yoga?

Yes, if they’re thin and breathable. Biker or compression shorts stay in place in every posture. However, very tight, thick pairs can rub and trap moisture in the heat. Choose a light pair, change out of them straight after class, and wash them after each use to keep your skin healthy.

How many pairs of hot yoga shorts should I bring to Bali?

Bring two pairs if you’ll practise up to three times a week, and three pairs if you’ll practise daily. Bali’s humidity slows drying, so a pair washed in the evening may still be damp the next morning. Cheap spare pairs are easy to order on Indonesian marketplace apps after you arrive.
